The crowd went wild as the cheers continued throughout the ballroom, and it was that moment Kim reached a milestone he had set to accomplish. In June 2017, Kim placed high enough in his competition to qualify for the next level. Achieving the WSDC All-Stars level was a celebration of all the work and passion Kim put into his swing dancing.

It started off as a social dance class in high school. Learning various ballroom dance styles, Kim had a strong interest when the class was taught East Coast Swing, a popular style of swing dancing during the late 1990’s swing revival. After meeting some friends and joining the school’s swing dance clubs, Kim spent his Saturday nights not doing homework but dancing at the local dance venue, the Murray Arts Centre. Continuing through college and after, Kim added Lindy Hop to his repertoire of swing dances that has influenced his fun, energetic style that he still has today.

Some West Coast Swing dancers crashed a local Lindy Hop event and took Kim with them. It was still the same style of swing dancing but yet a little bit different. Kim was drawn to the versatility of West Coast Swing in 2006, dancing the same moves he knows but to different music genres outside of traditional big band jazz. This would spark not only a revived passion for swing dancing but a renewed interest in teaching. Kim would return to the Murray Arts Centre not only as a teacher but a DJ and weekly dance director for the local West Coast Swing dance.

Looking to grow in West Coast Swing, Kim would travel and compete at national dance events all over the U.S. Taking from the top professionals on the convention circuit, Kim would receive high placements in his competitions and rise through the ranks of the WSDC. Meeting some new friends along the way, Kim would also teach workshops and DJ for dances at other local clubs and venues in the western U.S. region.

Kim’s fun, energetic style of dancing paired with his innate musicality continues to serve the community. He can be found teaching group classes and private lessons in the Salt Lake City area and the surrounding region. Kim can also be seen exploring other styles outside of swing dancing. He has since expanded his dance experience to include wedding first dances, hip hop, contemporary, and tap dancing. Whether it’s West Coast Swing or other styles of dancing, Kim looks forward to inspiring people to dance and have fun doing it.
